Travel Tip: Are you REAL ID ready?

As a luxury travel advisor, one of my top priorities is ensuring that my clients are prepared for any travel requirement, and one such crucial step for U.S. travelers is obtaining a REAL ID. If you're planning to travel within the United States or abroad, it’s important to understand how this identification will impact your future trips, especially when flying.

What is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a driver’s license or identification card that meets federal security standards. It’s designed to enhance security for U.S. domestic air travel and other federal purposes, such as entering federal buildings or military bases. Beginning May 7, 2025, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID (or another form of TSA-acceptable identification, such as a passport) to board a domestic commercial flight.

For those used to showing just a regular driver’s license when heading to the airport, the transition to REAL ID may seem like a minor inconvenience. But as you plan your next vacation, it’s essential to ensure your ID is up-to-date to avoid any disruptions to your travel experience.

Key Requirements for Obtaining a REAL ID:

1. Proof of Identity: You will need to bring official documents to the DMV/RMV to prove your identity. These may include:

   • A valid passport

   • Birth certificate

   • Social Security card

2. Proof of U.S. Citizenship or Legal Residency: Most people will need a valid passport or a birth certificate to confirm this.

3. Proof of State Residency: You will need to provide two proofs of residency, such as utility bills, rental agreements, or bank statements that match your current address.

Why Is This Important for Luxury Travelers?

Luxury travel is all about seamless, stress-free experiences, and the last thing you want is a last-minute complication at the airport. The REAL ID is mandatory for anyone flying domestically, and it’s designed to streamline and secure travel processes. If you’re booking a private jet or a first-class flight to a far-flung destination, even your pre-flight experience will be more refined when you ensure you have the correct documents.

REAL ID vs. Passport for International Travel

For international flights, your passport remains your primary travel document, and REAL ID will not replace it. However, for U.S.-based travel, REAL ID is a must. 

What Happens If You Don’t Have a REAL ID?

As of May 7, 2025, if you don’t have a REAL ID and attempt to fly without one, you will need an alternative form of identification, such as a valid passport. The process can take longer and could potentially cause delays at TSA security checks, causing added stress and time. 

A Few Tips:

1. Take Your Time – While waiting until the last minute may work for a regular ID, don’t leave your REAL ID renewal to the last second. Apply ahead of time to avoid rushed appointments.

2. Always Carry Your Passport – Keep it in your travel bag, even for domestic flights. While the REAL ID is sufficient, your passport is still a handy travel companion.

3. Verify Your Information – Double-check the personal information on your REAL ID to ensure it matches all of your other documents. This will save you from any future headaches.
